Manufacturers have therefore struggled to create more effective technologies and means of protection.. If the first smartphones were relatively fragile, today brands are innovating and paying much more attention to the quality of their equipment.

Water and dust resistance: IP68 standard

As summer approaches, you will need to be careful not to drop your smartphone into the pool, or worse, into the sea.. While you may be lucky and the drying equipment only passes once, things can quickly turn into ugly if your equipment is not protected from water damage.

There is a standard for dust and water resistance, more commonly known as IP ratings.This scale is a standard set by the International Electronic Commission (IEC) and objectively assesses resistance to solids and liquids according to well-defined criteria.

This index works with a resistance scale ranging from 1 to 6 for dust resistance and from 2 to 8 for humidity. Why not, will you tell me? Simply put, this number corresponds to completely zero water resistance, so it is excluded from the scale.

When it comes to dust, the standard tells you how your phone reacts to dust, sand, gravel, etc. With a score of 6, your device will be completely impermeable to small particles, so even after a sandstorm, you won’t end up with a smartphone full of small grains.

For liquids, the lowest rating is 2 and corresponds to a simple splash protection. Gradually, the scale tells you whether your smartphone can handle rain, water jets, until it finally reaches a value of 8, which offers total water resistance, even if your phone is submerged more than one meter deep for about 1 hour.

If you have a smartphone with the IP68 standard, your smartphone is protected from moisture and dust. But again, these tests are performed in a lab and do not rule out the potential risk of an accident with your phone.

IP68 smartphones are the ones that best withstand these two main risks. The following Samsung smartphones are IP68 certified:

If you own a Samsung Galaxy A33 or A53, your smartphone has an IP67 rating, which is very good dust resistance, but will be waterproof to a depth of 1 meter, instead of an hour for about 30 minutes. for IP68.

The IP68 standard remains a standard to be achieved by all manufacturers, and it is easy to imagine that this scale could increase in the future for phones that are even more resistant to water, dust and shocks.
